Kumamoto Organic electronics collaboration Counsil, Chairperson, Isao Taniguchi

In the era of “globalism”, Japanese manufacturing industries have to achieve continuous growth through perpetual challenges and global competitions getting tougher in every aspect. Even for the Kumamoto local economy, the situations are the same, and the Kumamoto semiconductor related industries which have been the key player of Kumamoto local economy in the past decades are also forced to make a new challenge and to expand their business field for further growth, utilizing their sophisticated technologies and experiences acquired through their long history of semiconductor business in the past. Considering these industrial trends, and focusing on “Organic Electronics” as a possible candidate of the business field expansion for Kumamoto local economy, in March 2011, we set up a technical facility “Kumamoto Institute for Photo-Electro Organics (Phoenics)” with a strong financial support from “Japan Science and Technology Agency” (JST) as well as aggressive collaborations among industries, academia and the local government in Kumamoto. In addition, we organized "Kumamoto Organic Electronics Cooperation Council" in order to manage these challenges and efforts made for the relevant field in Kumamoto. Fortunately in the same year, Kumamoto got designated as “Regional Innovation Strategy Promoting Region Focused on Strengthening International Competitiveness” by “Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI)”, “Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries” and “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”. And, along with the designation, Kumamoto proposal prepared focusing on organic electronics was adopted for “Regional Innovation Strategy Program” sponsored by “Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology”, and we started it in collaboration with Kumamoto University, Sojo University, Kyushu University, Kumamoto Industry Support Foundation and Kumamoto prefectural government. In Kumamoto, we have so many active companies of high technical potential and accumulated experience as wells as many technical institutes of a high research potential. Rallying all these local activities, in “Regional Innovation Strategy Program” we are promoting technology R/Ds in technical institutes and challenging its commercialization in local companies along with enhancement of human-resource development in Kumamoto region as well as wide range collaborations with regions outside of Kumamoto, such as with “OPERA” of Kyushu University. Through these efforts, we are encouraging semiconductor-related companies in Kumamoto to expand their business field to Organic Electronics, and enhancing enterprise invitation to Kumamoto in organic electronics related field. Our final goal is to launch a new local leading industry for next generation in Kumamoto subsequent to the current ones such as semiconductor, automobile, and so on, with effective utilization of research facilities deployed in “Kumamoto Institute for Photo-Electro Organics (Phoenics)” , by means of aggressive activities of visiting researches and coordinators in “Regional Innovation Strategy Program”, and, further, along with a wide range and tight collaborations among institutes and companies both inside and outside of Kumamoto,
